Malaysian Pioneer Artists of Penang

Dr. Tan Chong Guan

“Penang Chinese Art Club” was formed in 1935, probably the earliest artist association in Malaysia. It included all the well-known pioneer artists such as Yong Mun Sen, Tay Hooi Kat, Lee Chong Yong, Khaw Sia, Chuah Theam Teng and Kuo Jo Peng.

The Club was disbanded when the Japanese war began in 1940

“Penang Art Society” was formed 1953. During this talk, introduction of the lives of the pioneer artists and their most important paintings will be presented by slides. Many of these paintings will reveal the early Penang scene in the 1940’s to the 1960’s.
